Grinding Noise When put in forward

I just bought a 2008 20' Bennington Tritton with a 150h.p. Yamaha.  When I put it in forward it grinds

Is that putting it in forward with authority, or are you easing it into gear? They will all grind if you slowly enter the forward or reverse. Just an initial question to get that out of the way first.
