Key Switch Wiring Diagram

What brand of motor do you have?

Thank you cwag911. That's a good chart. All my colors are there except the YELLOW/BLACK STRIPE. I don't know how to test the switch.

I have a no start, no gauges, no trim issue at the helm.

I can start motor with screwdriver at starter. ( pull plug wires to stop)

Trim works at motor.

20 & 30 fuses at motor are good.

Battery charging works.

Have power at helm power strip bars

Radio works.

Horn works.

It's like a fuse is blown but can't find it.

Could it be a corroded or malfunctioning "kill switch" connection?

The lanyard kill switch itself checks ok.

Boat has been trouble free. Died under power on lake. Found 30 amp fuse blown and regulator burned up.

Battery conections were tight with nuts. No reason I know of to blow.

Now just won't start with key.

I would go wire by wire from the switch to the motor and ohm them out. I would also go to each wire on the switch and see if one is grounded out. We'll be in Pigeon Forge next week but I don't think it's close to you.

Send me a pm with your address or where the boat is and we'll go from there. My wife is sorta on board with this so I think I could give you an hour or two.

Never mind, I just looked at your profile and got the address.

Keep us updated on the findings and outcome

Carl, I have no doubt you would be a great friend

That Tracy Lawrence song comes to mind " You find out who your friends are"

In short I fixed it while tracing wires. Don't know how. Frustrating. Means it will pobably do it again.

Plan to go back through and clean connectors and put dielecric grease in them.

For a blow by blow see below...............................

2003 F75TLRB Yamaha 4 stroke on Bennington pontoon

In water:

Boat quit under power.

Would not turn over. Throttle trim would not work. Tack froze at 4. Horn and radio still worked.

Other gauges dead.

Moved throttle shifter to see if position had effect.

Removed lanyard from kill switch and pulled it in and out several times.

Still would do nothing. Got pulled to dock.

At dock:

Checked battery voltage and did a load test. Battery good.

Two fuses on motor - Found 30A fuse blown. 20A was good.

Replaced 30A fuse, blew instantly.

Disconnected all connectors at motor.

Replaced 30a fuse and started hooking them back up until fuse blew.

It would only blow with requlator red wire.

Took off regulator and back side was melted and burnt.

Replaced regulator and 30A fuse. (20A was stll good)

Made sure all connectors and wiring was back in place.

Still would not start with key switch.

Checked all fuses with ohm meter again, good.

Tried starting motor with screwdriver across starter relay terminals, started.

Trim at motor worked.

Drove to boat ramp and loaded boat.

Pulled spark plug wires to kill engine and brought home.

At Home:

After getting home tried all again. Verified my baseline, fuses all good, had trim at motor, no start at helm, could start with screwdriver, battery was charging, etc.

Started tracing process........

Checked lanyard kill switch with ohm meter, good.

Started disconnecting terminals and reconnecting.

Checked wires under boat for damage, none found.

Unconnected brn wire from starter relay and touched to positive to activate, good.

Started checking wire continuities and where I had power and where not.

Found I had no power to helm from motor 10 pin connector.

Went to motor to check 10 pin connector.

Found trim at motor was now not working.

Checked fuses again. 20A fuse was now blown. Was good before I started.

Replaced fuse. Now had power at 10 pin connector.

Went to helm and tried Key switch. Boat started!

Somehow I caused a short blowing the fuse and fixed something in the process, but what?

Thanks.

Maybe a relay somewhere was popped and during your testing and checking it reset ????

Very thorough problem solving! I'm probably not smart enough and would just give it to someone and say, "here, fix it." haha wish I could do it all myself! I hate taking my boat anywhere, I always figure they'll climb up with muddy shoes or put a scratch in it, or get grease on the seat. Sheesh, I'm a pain in the butt! Congrats on fixing it!

There are mechanics and there are parts changers. SteveH is a mechanic! I always try to fix what ever goes bad through diagnosis. I actually pulled the snow blower out yesterday as it was not running very well last year, it would almost flood itself out. I checked the oil level and bingo, crank was full of fuel/oil. Turns out the needle valve was sticking thus not stopping the carb bowl, and essentially the engine from drowning in fuel. Now it runs like a champ!
