What’s the purpose for the plastic? Can I get rid of it.

maybe? its not sealed it's just open ended plastic

I haven’t pulled mine apart to see if they have it. If I can’t see it, chances are it won’t bother me. If they aren’t sealed, I’d think they don’t serve a purpose.

I’m wondering if that’s the plastic they are in for protection and maybe they just stuff it inside the holders instead of tossing in garbage! Kind of like stuffing drywall scraps inside the stud cavity ...
