Here's the scenario... It's a beautiful day on the lake, and you and three or fifteen of your buddies are all tied up together in a hogline for a few ice cold beers and socializing. But wait! You're on a lake with no radio stations and everyone has something different on their stereos, making it almost unbearable to listen to.

I got tired of it, so I bought one of these: http://wholehousefmtransmitter.com

A buddy has one for music sharing within his house, and it has great range. I'm planning on running a line out of my iPod with a splitter, one directly to my head unit, the other directly to the transmitter. Viola! Now everyone can be listening to the same soundtrack.

I've read that the Whole House FM Transmitter has a 150 ft range.

Here's some alternatives:

http://www.hobbytron.com/fm-transmitter-home.html 200 ft (although they also offer some models for 1 mile plus)

This alpine unit comes with an Ipod Interface and is known for frequency response, has maybe a 40 ft range, but is already setup for automotive power sources.

Some folks use these and are very happy with them - very portable as they run on AAs. 50- 60ft

A friend runs this unit and says that he has a 1 mile range from his home. He said SQ is good and signal is strong. It would be cool to figure out what FM transmitter works best for a Boat Tie ups. Lots of transmitters out their and lots of choices.

Looks like you can run 2 diffrent styles of antennas.

Or Use the rear mounted antenna

I went with the Whole House for several reasons:

1) runs on batteries, so I can use it easily when at camp. It also runs right off a cigarette lighter plug, of which I installed two under my helm when I did my amps/subs install.

2) The antenna is integrated, and comes with an extension wire kit with tuning directions. No metal antenna to set up and break. Its all-in-one. Plus, 150' is plenty in reality. It would take a lot of boats to make a hogline 300' long.

3) Price- I got one on eBay for $60. No antenna or power supply to buy.

The Alpine unit you linked to is an FM modulator. it plugs in-line with the antenna and head unit. It does not physically brodcast any FM signals.

Sounds like a winner, let us know how it works out.

On the Alpine, a buddy in another boating forum posted it can be picked up 2 - 3 boats down. Guess I shouldn't believe everything I read on the internet.
