25R with 250 SHO Max?

I'm sure there are a few floating around but what is your question in particular? Performance of the VF250 vs standard F250? Comparison vs 200 or 300HP? Some additional particulars might get a few more responses.

I was hoping to find one with a F250 but the one I found has the SHO Max 250. Always thought that was more of a bass boat motor. Is that motor good for salt water?

The SHO used to be a bassboat engine but Yamaha have done some things recently to get it more with the salt crowd. 25-inch lower and larger 70a alternator namely.

Tradeoff is you can't get them in digital models, mechanical throttle only. You have to run 89 octane to take advantage of the hotter tuning. And I don't believe they offer them with the new integrated steering like the saltwater F series, but you might be able to add later in.

But a lot of salt guys run them on flats boats etc. so it's my understanding the metallurgy, coatings and anodes are set up to deal with corrosion.

You should probably double check with a dealer just to make sure.

Would YOU buy a boat with a SHO 250 if you lived on the FL Gulf Coast???

No - I like my DEC (digital) engine. And I don't want to go hunting and paying for 89 octane. And depending on how snotty the water and weather I may even want to upgrade to an F300 to be able to get home quicker if the SHTF.

BUT if I had my heart set on this particular boat then the SHO wouldn't be a bad option.

Thank You!! We have a nice ride, 24 SLX / 150 . Just wondering if the R25 was worth $40,000 more…….
Thanks!!

I think the R's look great - they're just heavy and performance suffers as a result. Even with that 250 it's probably barely as fast as your current boat, but maybe speed isn't a goal of yours. The furniture and helm quality should be a big step up though.

Hi there, I have a 2021 RXSB 25 with the SHO 250 in Florida Bradenton area. The motor is good in salt water no different in that regard from all the other Yamaha motors. It is a blast to run. Runs at a higher RPM than the conventional motors I can can get 45 mph without a lot of effort. I am very happy with it, runs smooth as silk and quiet. The performance curve is in line with the standard 300.
My previous boat for 15 years was a 32' Offshore with a pair of Yamaha 350 motors so I have something to compare to.
At 79 it was time to get into something more staid for an old fart however I am having just is much fun with this screamer :)).
