My boat is in storage, and I won't have access to it for another six weeks.  I am upgrading our sound system, and the installer would like to know what he's getting into.  I picked up the small Sony marine amp to improve the sound/bass quality.  But the more I start to ponder, I'd like to do this right the first  time.

I understand the concept of lots of power + mediocre speakers = better, but not great sound.  I know unless I add a subwoofer, I'm not going to get the thump I like.  Yet at the same time, I can't imagine driving a boat with a sub in the helm rattling my teeth till they hurt.

If I was a passenger, I'm not sure I'd like to be sitting on top of the sub either.  I have an RCW closed stern.  I'm not looking for Carnegie Hall or a rock concert scenario.  Would upgrading just the stock speakers get me to where I want to go (thinking the bass will be a bit better?  Or would I be better off getting the sub and leaving the stock speakers alone?  And then where do I mount the sub?  Please don't tell me from behind  :p .

Thanks for your comments.

Jack, what's it like having the sub under the helm as far as the captain's comfort?

It really does not impact me at all. I have the wet sounds sub under my helm. I also upgraded my amp and installed tower speakers on the back rail.

The "Only" issue I have is that it rattles the door ,and there is no "good" way to keep the door open while under way .

I do have a complete factory  Wet Sounds system

Hi Tom, I also have the Wet Sounds sub under the helm and I don't experience any noticeable rattle of the door, and it's nothing a little strategic stick on weatherstripping couldn't take care of. If you aren't looking for crazy amounts of bass, you can also just turn the sub down a little so that it provides a nice accompanied low end to your music. Here are a few shots of my setup under helm

Hope they help!

My wife said she needed the boat for some new workout class she was taking, up until your comment I never cared because she always brought it back with the tank full. She's got some explaining to do! Haha

I meant it as you were on the pole!
