This year we are looking to purchase a new boat hook as the old homemade one we had on our old boat scares me as to the damage that it can inflict on our nice new vinyl seats and trim.  Yes we made it through one season but it only takes once to do some damage and I'm not looking forward to that happening anytime soon.  I'm leaning towards the shurhold 130 brand hook (granted you have to purchase a handle separate to use the tip) offered on amazon for less than 11 bux and another 31 for the telescopic handle.

What hook do you guys use and prefer?  I'm looking for something durable but not ultra expensive...like to keep it under $50 if possible.

I've seen those on Amazon before. After having one fall apart, I won't buy another cheap one.

I would recommend the 9 foot version. I think the 6 footer would leave you wanting more. You use up 2 feet just holding onto it with two hands. That leaves 4 foot, just enough to pick up something off the ground by your feet. It's a couple more feet from the deck to the water from inside the boat! Okay, I'm exaggerating some, but I'm just trying to make the point.

I like the Amazon one because the hook has more of a fork shape built into the hook so it won't slip off the edge/corner of the dock. The west marine one looks like it would slip and not lock onto a dock corner as well.

I have the one from West Marine and no problems for 6 or 7 years. I also bought clips to mount it to the rail next to the helm seat. It's always ready.

bpcnick how small does the 9 foot pole shrink down to?  I'm hoping to find one that I can store in the lounge seat bottom when not in use.....one reason I was looking at the 6 footer(42"-72").  Less things on the floor to trip over when moving around in the boat is always good.

I'm not sure off the top of my head. It does fit fine under the starboard lounger in the back of my 2275 GCW. I might get the shorter one if I were buying again. I didn't have a great place for it on my 22 SSX.

I always kept mine on the floor next to the captains chair up against the fence. Out of the way, yet quick to grab. 75% of the time I used it, I needed it NOW, if you know what I mean.

Same here - never in the way and handy if needed.

I want to mount a couple rubber grip clamps to the roof in the center toon storage. I have a hook but it ends up in the bottom and never used.

My 13 yr old daughter has become such a great dock hand that I don't even think about it anymore. Bum, if you haven't bought one, you can try mine for awhile.

Yep use the West Marine one too, never a problem. Since we never use our bimini top I stow the boat hook in the boot with the top, quick unzip and its ready to use. Not sure about you guys but anytime we are docking the boat hook comes out 5 minutes ahead.

Steve

We have one and never use it. Not sure on the length. It is on the boat boat stored in the front chase.

I'm going to pull mine out of the boat and put it in my car.

That way when I'm forced to pass another idiot on the right as they can't understand that the left lane is for passing-

I can use the hook to reach over and whack that cell phone out of there hands.
