Hour meter

hi all. Got my 21slx yesterday and was breaking in the 90hp Merc today. It now has 1.5 hours. At the bottom of the rpm gauge is a rectangular digital indicator. The right side indicates the number of hours. On the left side a symbol I couldn't identify because it is so small, was flashing continually. I can't find anything in the owners manual. Anyone know what this symbol is and means? It looks like a thermometer or hourglass to these old eyes. Thanks.

It flashes when the engine is running. Not when the key is on, which is a common follow-up question.

On a pontoon, you can hear the motor running. Other boats that use these guages, maybe not.
