Just bought 2017 S20. 90 yamaha. Fuel gauge said it had a quarter of a tank but would only hold 5 gallons. Stayed on 1/4. Finally showed empty. Held 8 1/2 gallons. Went to less than 1/2 on gauge. Sending unit? Something else? Thanks in advance for any help.

Sounds like sending unit and float. Best to change out completely. It’s no fun running out of gas ⛽

It's either the sending unit, the gauge or corrosion in a connection somewhere. I would check those connections and clean them first, then if it doesn't resolve perform a check on the sending unit. There are youtube vids on how to perform this and should be easy if you have a basic DIY skillset.

Be sure to also take a visual of the gas tank to verify readings, there should be an access hatch you can use.
