Took delivery last Friday and have been installing a chart-plotter and getting familiar with things before we take to the water tomorrow, wx permitting in NE Florida.
This is not our first pontoon. We had a Sun Tracker 24' Party Barge back in the early 1990's but sold it to get an off shore boat. Now we're older and my knees and back can't take the pounding so we decided to get another pontoon. The fishing platform on this boat fits our needs perfectly for river and inland lake fishing and cruising.
I just had a chance to look at the covering and uncovering video so many of those questions and tips have been mostly covered.
Some questions:
I have a Mighty Mite anchor and 150' of line with 15' of chain. Probably overkill but the Saint Johns river around Jacksonville has a wicked tidal flow and the wind can also be tough.
** On that thought... Where do most folks stow the anchor? On the other boat I kept the line, chain, and anchor in a tall kitchen type trash can and lashed it to a railing. The top rails on this boat don't have clearance for the line to go between them and the side panels.
** The lockable compartment door at the helm is a waste. Why lock a compartment that's accessible by lifting the seat in front of the helm?
** The standard steering cable sure makes steering in a turn tough. Has anyone upgraded to a hydraulic, no feedback system? If so, at what cost?
** The courtesy light on the side of the helm is always on when either NAV or Anchor lights are on. Can it be turned off or do I need to add an on/off switch at the light?
** Battery?? Of course the dealership installed a small start battery but I don't trust it to run the chart-plotter, stereo, and the live-well pump when the engine is shut down for any period of time. I'm thinking about getting a marine AGM but don't know what group size would be preferred.
** Upholstery treatment... I get 1 gallon jugs of Starbrite water proofing and spray on the awning of the RV. Should that work well or is something else preferred?
** Prop size/pitch... It came with an aluminum 13 3/4" x 15 pitch prop from the dealer. Not looking for a speedboat but want to be sure the 115 Yamaha can tach out to the preferred RPM of, I think, 5800. I think my previous Yamaha 250 4 stroke would tack out at 6200 if trimmed properly. I was told to run this boat with the trim down as it doesn't have any real effect when trimmed up like a v-hull boat.

I know that's a lot for now and there will probably be more after a few trips to the water but thanks for any and all inputs.

Welcome to the forum John. Answers to a couple of your questions.....We keep our anchor under the portside front corner seat. Perfect fit. I just run the line outside the front gate and tie off on a cleat I had specifically installed for the anchor. We keep our rear anchor in the rear corner seat to prevent the toon from swinging. Pontoons are like a big sail, you're going to need one in the rear. Our boat came with hydraulic steering. Many on this forum have power steering or power assist. Just press that courtesy light. It will shut off. Install another battery for your chartplotter. Having a 2 battery system sounds like a must for you. Do you mean to use the Starbrite waterproofing spray on your mooring cover and/or Bimini top? That's fine but it's not for your seats. Use 303 products or any other reputable vinyl conditioner. I am sure other forum members will have more answers for you.......

Thanks BigKahuna.
I have used the regular 303 for other applications but have never bought the fabric protector version.
Good to know about the courtesy light. It can be distracting if on at night.
Sounds like I need to install a cleat in the center of the bow deck.
I've not had the need for a stern anchor because the current is so strong the boat doesn't wander much. I do have an extra flute type anchor if I decide to use it.
Ours is the fishing platform so there isn't a forward lounge seat. It has 2 fishing chairs forward and two aft.
I may add a second battery but I'm leaning towards a larger AGM. I can set the Garmin chart-plotter to sound an alarm at a specified voltage and start the engine if it goes off.
Hydraulic steering may be in the future but it won't be cheap. I'll know more after a few water trips and may just learn to deal with the stiff steering.
Take care

Welcome John!

Will try to answer a few other questions.

Locking helm isn’t very secure but some furniture layouts such as mine do not allow front access. Keeps the honest people out.

Battery I would absolutely get a second. As I’ve been told before, your top priority should be to protect your ability to get home - imagine being 5 miles offshore and a storm is coming your way. The last thing you need at that moment is a dead battery. 2nd battery not only provides the proper deep cycle for the house circuit but can serve as an emergency crank if needed. Group size would all depend on how much and how long the draw, but a 27 is probably fine. I personally would go with a 31 if you have the room in case you’re running that live well all day. If you install an ACR it will charge your house while running and can size down.

Prop - another user on this forum gave some really good advice to reach out to Bennington with your hull ID# and ask for a prop recommendation. They will give you a starting point for a prop (based on their testing data) and then you can fine tune from there.

Trimming down - not sure where you got this info but I think most planing hulls can benefit from proper trim angle. In fact I would think if you are trimmed all the way down - based on these transoms - you have negative trim and preventing your bow from coming up. With a 115 I would think you could gain some speed and efficiency, so give it a go. Pontoons act as planing hulls just not as well as a traditional v-hulls.

I have the power assist hydraulic steering and am quite happy with it. I do have the boat slipped so there is a bit of turning required and I’m performing a lot of maneuvers during my fishing day. $2,400 option with my F250. With your F115 and use it might not be worth the extra dough, but once you have it you won’t regret it.

Enjoy the boat!

Install your bow anchor cleat to one side. If you enter or exit from the front gate you don't want it in the middle. Somebody will trip for sure.
