Has anyone used the OCA or Tuffskinz vented splash covers? I ordered one today, hopefully they perform as advertised! Review to come.

Others have talked about covering their outboards on here but I have never had the desire to do so.  I have felt, perhaps wrongly so, that it is just as bad to trap moisture under the cover

I have a canvas cover, but I always use a detailer or vinegar/water on the engine cover and dry it all before I put the cover on. Any dirt beneath it will put scratches on it, just like with a car.

I cover my motor. The cover keeps the engine clean and hopefully will reduce fading from the sun. I clean the engine cover with soap and water. Dry it real good then put the cover on. Works great.

This brings up a topic I was going to start a while back. Are there no air filters on outboards?

Lakeliving, the 2-stroke engines were much smokier, with the advent of 4-stroke engines there is not a need for air filters as long as no smokers are allowed on the boat

theoretically, there should not be any dust or dirt over the water, so no need for air filter...that is what I was told years ago anyway.

Depending on the size of your water and winds etc. dust can come accross the surface. In the spring here everything is yellow from the pollen. That is getting in the motors for sure. Not to mention bugs etc. I'm sure.

The ones that I am talking about are designed to stay on all of the time, even when on the water.  I have seen several bass fisherman using them on thier rigs.

I don't like that look. I cover mine after wiping it down with the Lemon Pledge, and allowing the motor to cool down after use.

You can say that it keeps it from getting scratched even while using it, but you could also say that about your car, and it cost much more than a motor but you don't put a cover on it while going down the road. Keep it maintained with wax or other treatment, and it will be fine. I think the motor looks "prettier" without the cloth, or other material covering it while in use.

I'm surely not slamming your view on this at all. Different stroke for different folks. I hope it's everything you want it to be for you.

Randy, you are to Lemon Pledge like Jack is to Amazon.com!!!!!

Valid point spoiled, but in my experiance, for some reason, the sun has really done a number on all of my other outboards (especially the top of the motor).  Much more than it has done to the paint on my trucks.  I just want to be able to maintain the perfect finish on the cowling for when I get ready to trade in.  It may not work out like I want it too, but we will see.

I totally understand your position! I have gotten to the point that I not longer worry about what the next guy will have in a vehicle or boat that I bought and maintain. I want a vehicle that I can enjoy and use to the best of my expectations. I not longer worry about what I can get for the product or what others will think about it. I only care about how much use I can get out of it. I pay cash for everything I have, including the boat I just bought. I buy and pay cash for my house, vehicles, and everything else I have. I used to worry about what I would get for something when I sold it. That, to me is worrying too much about the next person. I guess I've reached that point in life where I started living for myself. When this life is over, it will pass to someone else, anyway.
