Hi everybody, with all of the discussions on Shark Hide and toons I thought I would post these photo's to give an idea of what the product does and does not do.  These photo's were taken yesterday when we pulled the boat from the water.   I applied 4 coats of Shark Hide in late April and put the boat in the water in early May.  The boat was stored in a slip at a Marina in the water all summer long.  As you can see, below the water line Shark Hide tends to wear off much quicker but above the water line keeps the toons looking nice.  I would also add that it seemed much easier to clean algae and build up off the toons during the summer.   I believe the Shark Hide Faq section also indicates that the product is not necessarily meant for full protection below water line.  Hope this helps those contemplating using the product.  Overall, I like the product and expected these results however, I did kind of think 4 coats might prevent some underwater wear but obviously not.

It might depend too on how hard your water is.  Our water here is extremely hard.  If I left my boat in the water continuously for several months I'm sure it would look way worse than yours.  I've got 3 coats of SH on my inner tubes and about 5 coats on the outers and the SH works very well but then my boat sits on a trailer when not used.  I still use Boat Candy to remove any water spots but the SH certainly makes clean up easier.  I think SH does do a great job for what it is.  I have friends with pontoons who didn't apply SH and their tubes certainly don't look new.  Some areas are almost black.  And, they trailer their boats as well.  I think SH is a very good product but of course it's not perfect and some maintenance is still required.  I've got a couple of very small areas I'll touch up this winter where either the fenders or the boat guides have rubbed but that's about it.  I'm glad I applied the stuff when my boat was brand spanking new.  It certainly helps.

I'm thinking now that we have the photo's up here the next time someone starts inquiring about Shark hide we can simply throw all of these links at them.

Sharkhide may not be the solution for every situation, but for me it has been fantastic. I put my boat in the water for 4-5 days at at time, 5-7 times per year. My toons still look shiny and new. I couldn't be happier. I'm due for a re-coat before next season but not because it is failing, just planning ahead.

Yep I'm happy with the Sharkhide as well.  It's not perfect but it's certainly better than nothing at all.

Hmmmmm.......I wonder how durable painted toons would be?!?!?

More durable than Sharkhide, but scratches are inevitable and unless you're really good with an airbrush you would go nuts trying to blend in paint on paint so it doesn't show.

Maynard,

Just curious. I've seen 2 different other brands with painted toons as options. I guess powder coated toons would be much more durable than just regular painted toons. The thing that gets me is just how dirty my toons look and I applied 3 coats of Sharkhide in the spring. It looks even worse below the water line.
