So I had an issue with my Simrad and opened up a ticket with Navico tech support. They replied back and fixed my issue (something was off in my setup...user error), but also mentioned that there's a new software version which is 20.2 that released 4/14/21. I told them that my unit had the previous 20.1 version. He replied back and said if your unit works good with the current software, then his suggestion was to remain with the older 20.1 version. I'm curious as to why he would tell me this. Has anyone updated to the new 20.2 software and if they did is there a noticeable improvement?

Thanks

I was told the same thing for my Simrad GO5. If it's working fine leave it alone. So I haven't updated to the new software. I tend to believe that not all updates/upgrades are helpful or needed. For example we have an 85 inch Sony Bravia TV. It asked if I wanted to update the software version and I hit Yes. Well when it was finished updating I found that I had lost some features like an expanded TV Guide which allowed me to zip through programming and some functions on the voice remote that I had to recover. I cringe when it asks me if I want to update now......

I updated last week

I have seen no improvement or issues. I have not noticed any difference

Many MFD manufacturers will provide notes as to what the upgrades do - see link for 20.2. If it doesn't impact you then skipping is probably fine. But sometimes when the notes say generically "...and other improvements" you're almost compelled to update to the latest version.

I've always suspected that updates to tech including my iPhone and PC are partially a means to expedite the planned obsolescence of a device. So unless my MFD is broken or there is a game changer in the update I'm going to avoid it. Works great out of the box as is.
