I am a new owner of a 2004 Bennington 257L with a 90hp Johnson Salt Water Edition. I purchased the boat in April of this year. Due to heavy rains, I have used the boat only about 5 times. The month of May was pretty much a no go here in Kentucky! I know this is a motor issue and not the boat, however, I hope someone might be able to offer a rookie, like me, some advice!

The problem is --- the engine runs great, 18/19 mph according to my gps, however, when I shut the engine down for as little as 10 minutes and try to restart, the engine will start but when I advance the throttle it will die. I have to pump the fuel bulb and let it idle in neutral for a minute or two before it will go.

I have replaced the fuel line and bulb and replaced the spark plugs. I have been told that it is due to low quality fuel and to use fuel additives. This still does not seem to help. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

If you go over to the Iboats forum there is a wealth of info on motors. Some of those guys really know there stuff.

Hopes this helps

Lizard, most outboards use a diaphram style fuel pump that works off cranckcase pressure. While i am not an expert on them, it sounds to me like you have a weak fuel pump. But as Steve said, try a different forum, like one for Johnson engines, and see if there is more help there. And by the way, welcome to the forum!

Lizard, glad to see another Benny owner in KY. Check out the Lake Cumberland com forum. This has been a major topic of conversation lately regarding vapor lock (yes, even on outboards) due to the high levels of ethanol in our fuel. Several certified mechanics have weighed in and suggested stabil in every tank and to only purchase fuel from the marina that is ethanol free.

There also was a Verado guy saying he had the same problem and one local mercury guy dumped in the Mercury brand tuneup fuel injector cleaner. It seemed to work.

Thanks to everyone who responded to my plea for help! I will try all of the suggestions and let you know how it goes.

Thanks again,

Liz.

Depending on that kind of fuel filer and or water filter you have a small amount of water in fuel can give the symptoms. At idle and low speed vacuum and fuel pick is likely to be closer to "trapped" water in the filter and cause rough low speed running and stalls. Something to check which should be pretty fast id your filters are east to access
