I'm not sure why they call it “driving” a boat. There’s virtually nothing about boating that’s like driving a car, other than they both have a steering wheel. “Driving” a boat is like driving a car on glare ice, where the back wheels steer instead of the front, and the concrete moves all the time. “Driving” a boat is like driving a car that’s virtually weightless and instead of winds having to blow 40-50 mph before you feel it, a 4-5 mph wind can blow you sideways. “Driving” a boat is like being in a crowded parking lot where half the other cars are driven by teenagers and there are no lines painted on the ground. Unlike a boat, a car goes where you steer it. A boat will not travel the same path forwards and backwards as you shift gears and hold the wheel still because of the gyroscopic effect called prop walk. “Skidding” a boat is far more descriptive than “driving” a boat. Docking a boat is like a stunt man skidding a car sideways into a tight spot with parked cars on both sides, only in slow motion. Bumpers and fenders on boats are actually meant to hit things on a regular basis. Parking a boat isn’t as easy as moving a shift lever, it means time spent securing dock lines and adjusting spring lines. Loading a boat onto a trailer is like driving a car up into the bed of a pickup. Ever been in a parking lot where everyone stops what they’re doing to watch you park? Welcome to the boat ramp. The next time someone asks if they can “drive” your boat, or they don’t understand why docking can be stressful at times, try not to laugh too hard.
