I'm a new member from Wisconsin. I own a 2018 Bennington 16 with a 30 HP Merc. 4 stroke. It tops out at 3800 RPM forward, in reverse it will go above 5000 RPM. Is this underpowerd or is there a problem somewhere?

What size prop are you running?

SemperFi has a fairly similar set up. Perhaps he could you test his boat in reverse and see if RPM is the same as forward or is this the norm. And 358Scot if you look at your motor brand test results for your size engine what do they say RPMs should be

5200 rpm

It is normal for a boat prop to unload with high power in reverse. That will typically both cavitate and aerate the prop. RPM of only 3800 in forward likely means it's time for a tune up or a different prop.

Ken is super knowledgeable. He recently helped my brother find the best prop for his particular situation, even though he didn’t carry said prop. He also helped me out in the past, even though it didn’t result in a sale for him.

5000 rpm in reverse….why would you need that much throttle?

Trying to determine why I can only get 3800 RPM WOT in forward. Not the fuel (I siphoned the old), changed fuel filter, not a dead cylinder, goes to 5800+ in neutral-so it's not the the throttle linkage and I don't think it's the prop ( to go from 3800 to 5500 it would have to decrease the pitch by over 8".
