Cleaning scale off engine cowling

Just thought I'd share a little tip. I had a lot of scale build up on my engine cowling that was really stubborn, and refused all attempts to clean it off. I tried everything. Vinegar solution, rubbing compound and buffer for hours, and every cleaning solution and trick I could think of and it only made a very slight improvement. I was just about convinced it was etched into the clear coat and would never come out. I was about to wet sand it when I decided to try a more powerful chemical. I was hesitant to go this aggressive because I feared it might damage the clear coat, but I was looking at sanding it anyway, so I gave it a shot.

I used Works toilet bowl cleaner on a rag (with gloves) full strength straight out of the bottle. After letting it soak for about 1 minute, all the scale came right off with simple wiping of a microfiber cloth. Once I got it all off, I immediately rinsed with a soapy solution of Dawn and lots of water. It even got all the scum off the lower unit as well.

It also did a real nice job on the pontoons.
