Our 2003 Bennington with a 50hp Mercury 4-stroke motor runs very well in warm weather but won’t start in cold weather without great difficulty or if the water temperature is cold. We are wondering if the problem might be a temperature gage on the Bennington. Thanks for your help!

Is the engine carbureted or EFI. Either one can have cold weather starting problems. The gauges won't have anything with a cold start problem. You probably need a qualified engine tech.

If you’ve never had carb rebuilt, probably a good time along with a good tank flush, filters and all hoses swapped out. With today’s ethanol, hoses that old have probably been breaking down and can cause lots of carb issues. It could be as simple as a idle jet clog when cold (metal contracted) but is just enough when warm, to get fuel through the jet.

Thank you for your response! The Mercury motor is an EFI. We are thinking it may be a temperature sensor. We will be pulling our boat out of storage next week and hope that we can find the problem.

Good luck and report back so other's might learn. While you're at it, post a few pics of your Benny!
