A few years ago, I had a device you could get xm with portably. Used it on tractors, side by sides, as well as the boat. I put the little magnetic mount antenna front right of the helm by the depth finder. Had no issues with reception as I recall.
Not a soul has suggested the old familiar frisbee. Something every boat should not be without. They are cheap and always fun on the beach.
We keep extras because they seem to not make it back to the boat.

Practice is the best way to figure it out. Everyone has their own methods.
I start from the upwind side and (drive/let the wind move) me into position. Previous sentence may not sound right but, you get the idea. With practice you can figure out what it takes.
