I have a 2024 Bennington Rx25sba tritoon with a Mercury V10 350 verrado . Had it on the lake this weekend and opened it up and to my disappointment I got beat by a Avalon 25’ Mercury 250. My boat topped out at 43 mph at 5250 rpm’s. Had 4 adults and one child on board. A little head wind with calm waters. All the forums and posts I read say the setup I have should max out at around 54mph and at 6400rpms. My question is what the heck LOL?

Is this a new to you tritoon? Always performed this way?

My first inclination is you are poorly proped. On the surface, that seems to be the issue. What make/model prop and prop size do you have on your motor?

Now depending on the answers to ALL the above, there are other possibilities. Motor mount height can impact things a bit, but likely not that much. If there is any sort of water in your pontoons, that also can have a major impact on the above. However, more times than not, it is a poorly propped tritoon that is at the heart of a situation like yours. Share your details (my questions above) with the community, and you are likely to get some great feedback and advice.

Welcome to the forum Barbarian! Keep in mind that your R is a big heavy boat w/a heavy 350 on the back! Not to mention having 4 1/2 people onboard and probably a cooler full of food and drinks/beer!!! There could be a few more factors involved. Are your pontoons clean? Was the Bimini up? Prop size? How has your boat performed with just you or you and your wife onboard?!?

Yes - dirty pontoons is another VERY common factor in loss of performance (if there was a loss vs its always performed this way).

Hello VikingStaff. Thank you for the reply. Yes it is a brand new boat. Just hit the 20 hour mark. Not sure the size of the prop and can’t remember the make and model off the top of my head. I will get that info for sure. As far as water in the toons I’m not sure on that. The pontoon is a new type of boat for me so still learning. Have had deck boats prior to the pontoon.

Hello BigKahuna. Thank you for the response. I realize the boat is a bigger boat and on the heavier side. Yes both Bimini tops were open and only 1 keg of beer on board lol ( JK of course) but yes a few soft sided coolers were on board. I will look into the pro make/model/ and size. As far water in the pontoons I’m not sure. If there is how do you drain them? As far as the performance of the boat with just the wife and I I haven’t opened it up because I was in the break in period still. Just hit the 20 hour mark. One other question and this is probably something I will figure out but I had it trimmed to 6 to 7 while at full throttle. At cruising speed it seems to ride perfect at 3 or 4. What is the max trim I can go at full throttle. Obviously you don’t want to much trim because it won’t allow water to cool the motor at to much trim.

Also avalons are not built the same as a Bennington, they weigh much less . My neighbor had one 3 ft longer and both with 250 Verados his was faster. I'll take the quality and ride .

Given its a new boat, It probably comes down either to boat weight and size (its robust in those areas due to build quality) and/or prop. Once you have that prop info, report back. You have RPM’s being left on the table there, so there is certainly something at play OTHER THAN boat size/weight. Knowing it’s new now, most likely prop.

We also have a double Bimini and although the boat performs well with it up its a different story with it down and in its boots and in trailer or radar position! Just picture you cruising down the lake with 2 parachutes deployed and then you put them away! Your boat will no longer have that restriction or resistance anymore and it'll fly! (But my wife has had a bout w/skin cancer so the biminis are always up for shade!) As far as your trim goes when you accelerate and trim up the bow will come up resulting in less boat making contact with the water and of course will go faster! You can feel it! Just play around with it and you'll find your spot!

My 2021 26LX ESP 1.25 Merc 350 (8cyl?) - Top speed 48mph with 1/2 tank, double bimini up, headed down-wind/stream - my boat is loaded with equipment. See the List Your Specs Here post.

So my prop is a Revolution Mercury 20r.
That prop is designed for that motor. However, my understanding is it’s a 4 blade wide cupped prop focused on hole shot and holding power. It is not designed as a top speed prop when at WOT. Also, the pitch is probably a bit much given where your RPM’s are at at WOT. With that particular 4 blade prop, you could drop down in pitch size, although I think the smallest version is maybe the 18R. You probably gain a bit more speed, but not too much.

If you want to switch your performance focus to maximum speed at WOT, instead of mainly hole shot, you would want to explore different 3 blade props that are cupped and designed for that goal. For that Mercury Verado motor, the right sized Mercury Enertia prop would focus more on top end speed at WOT, but you would give up some of that hole shot.

Thank you sir for all the info. Greatly appreciated. I found a Mercury Enteria 15.3”x 14p is what they are recommending for top speed and overall best performance.

I also looked at and in my center toon and it had maybe an inch and a half of water in it. I’m thinking that is normal due to it being open in the back.

Hmmm…That pitch seems low for a 350 v10 Verado, but I also have a lighter tirtoon than you (I have a 15p (?) on my 200HP Verardo).

My guess would have been about a 17p maybe an 18p in the Enertia. Dig around in the thread in the forum on Boat Specs. See if you can find a close match with your boat, and what prop they are using vs their performance numbers. Also, maybe give Ken a call at Prog Gods as Jack recommended above before committing to purchasing anything. He’s very dialed in and accurate with recommendations. Many on here have solicited his advice/recommendations. Propgods.com
