I have a 2014 24SLX Tritoon and it does not have a speedometer.  Can It be added.  If so any idea on price for labor and all?

Thanks

How about a Garmin that has GPS built into it

There are several free iPhone apps for GPS speedos.

I believe most modern outboards have have the pitot tube built in. And Teledyne makes boat speedo's, so find one you like and get the install kit with it.

You would have to ask your local boat repair shop what an install would cost, but it should not be too difficult, maybe you could do it yourself?

Stupid question time. I'm thinking of adding a speedo too, just because I want one. The speedo with the Garmin that runs off GPS, well tell me how does that work? Do you use your phone as a 'hot spot' or what? How do they get the signal? Running a speedo to the 115 Yamaha I have, I assume that I would have to run the cable under my under deck shielding or snake it over the pontoon and back to the motor - yes? Thanks

Bcpnc,

So nothing else then? Just hook up the Garmin and go, right? What is the least expensive Garmin that will do that? Of course I ordered a 100 when I ordered the boat which is money I could have put to the MPH one. Would the cabling be the same for the two? Perhaps I could just swap the units out and not have to worry about running new cables. Hmmm....

thanks for the input.

Yep. It's just a GPS antenna like the one in a smart phone or a handheld GPS. A nicer Garmin with the GPS in it might need a better transducer than the 100 to maximize it's underwater features. There are some threads around here discussing that. I thought about swapping mine out for something nice like that but I have come to prefer using an iPad Mini with Navionics charts and topo/sat maps. I get speed and a lot more functionality for a fraction of the price and no permanent mod to the boat. The only downer is I don't have a better fish finder than the 100, but I'm okay with that.

I've got an iPhone 6 and I suppose I could use that but then I'd have to remember to bring it and of course it could always fall in the 'drink' somehow. Bottom features aren't a concern for me as I don't fish, just depth and speed is all I care about so maybe if I just swap out the main unit and keep everything else the same?

Or just put that iPhone 6 into a Lifeproof case and toss it on a suction mount. The Lifeproof case won't stop it from sinking, but they have a flotation ring you can add. My Ram mount has been through rough stuff and never popped loose with the iPad on it. And if it did, it would just fall on the floor. I wouldn't dare mount it on the right side of the helm.

You've got me thinking. The dealer really should have been more on top of it and said, hey for a little bit more you can have aGarmin with speed. Sometimes they don't take enough time to think things through with their customers well enough. Oh well. What canyon are you in in the pic? I like.

Well, in the dealers defense, they'll charge you a LOT more for the Garmin with GPS/speedo. It might only retail for a few hundred more than the standard Echo 100, but I think the MSRP bump installed at the factory is more like $1000.

That's Bowns Canyon, a side canyon of Glen Canyon on Lake Powell. Here's the view from above:

The shot with the ipad above was taken around the narrow bend on the right. We also camped on a beach up there for 5 days. Fun place to explore.

Bcpnick,

I called Garmin today and had a nice conversation with a very helpful person. Their Echo Map 43DV is a direct plug-in replacement for the 100. No cabling wiring or anything needs to be done. It uses the same transducer. It has speed, depth, temp, etc............. It's $299 and is not much bigger than the 100. In fact, it's thinner. A surface mount is also available for it in addition to the pedestal mount. I think I found my solution. I'll wait until my boat is delivered in two weeks before I pull the trigger on the 43DV. Thanks for everyone's input.

Very cool! I had no idea the DV models could use the same transducer. I think I might have to upgrade my Echo 100 now! Thanks for letting us know. Be sure and report back on how you like it.

That's what the "Garmin Guy" told me.

Bcpnick,

What a great place to have taken a cruise. I like.

Wow that is a super nice Garmin installation. I have a Garmin 536s that has the same dimensions and faceplate as your 431s. I'm hoping I can install it in like fashion in my yet to be delivered 2275 GCW with raised helm?

Tooncrazy, I have a 531 installed where CWag's is.  My dealer did the flushmount.  It is such a tight fit that my Garmin cover does not "snap" on tight and I remove it while towing my boat for fear of it flying off
