I have a R23 RSB with dual batteries and the batteries are under the swichback seat. Are the batteries supposed to be covered? terminal covers? battery box? Mine are just like open and I am afraid of something shorting it out.

I can tell you that back in the old days batteries were not in battery boxes. They’re also not in most cars or on my golf cart. That said, maybe someone much more knowledgeable will have an actual answer as to why or why not they should be in one.
I’m thinking that it might have something to do with possibly reducing the chance of an explosion, but that’s just a guess.

Lastly, a quick visit to Amazon and two will magically appear on your doorstep in a few days.

They do not need battery boxes. I think on inboards they were to limit potential sparks, ignition sources with fuel vapor. With the sun pad shut what would short them out? Just don't keep random tools and scraps of metal back there that could bounce around

My 2024 has a bottom tray and a black top cover. Picture below is without black top cover.

Here is a pic
So don't ignore the aluminum cover poles laying next to the uncovered battery posts. If one of those bounced up between a + and - you have a short and a fire. Battery posts should always be covered in these applications. Murphy's law, if it can happen it will.

Yea. I'll be sure to move them or put the cover on top of them

I like “where” your dealership rigged up your battery install. Mine stucked one of my two batteries somewhat beneath the support for the Swingback seat closer to the Perko switch. major PITA to access, remove, etc… Wish mine were set up like yours.

As to your question, it varies. Dealerships rig that up, so you could speak to the purchase dealership to get their thoughts, or share your concern. Mine had a strap and top cover origianlly. I liked that as a way to protect the terminals, but I didn’t really have a concern with it. When we went to larger Optimal Blue Top batteries, they were longer, and the original tray and top cover with strap don’t fit them. My battery terminals are now uncovered. I’m not worried as we do not keep anything metal in that storage area. That is were we store noodles, swimming and floaty type goods. Towel beach bags, etc…

What my area looks like these days:
