Bunk style guides, inside or outside? See photo...

My dealer installed 12' carpeted 2x4 bunk style guides on the outside of my trailer. I haven't put the boat back on the trailer yet so I don't know how well they work.


I thought these were typically put on the inside to avoid dents/scratches on outside of the toons?????


Before I call the dealer, I am looking for opinions from more experienced tooners.


Opinions of where they function better? (inside or outside)

Well, I had those style guides on my 25' SW fishing boat (fiberglass) and they worked fine.  My Benny trailer came with the post style guides on the rear.  They help a lot but I also put the carpeted guides on (between the pontoons) and I think they help the most. 
 
For me on a pontoon having them on the outside would be better as you could look over the side to see them. Loading and getting centered was always a challenge for me. So I adopted a way to look over the side to see the bunk line.

I think that would work well for a pontoon.  I would give those a shot.
 
Gonna give it a whirl next week. I added flexible markers on the tail of the guides to aid in lining up.
 
I agree that the visual aid of seeing them would be beneficial.


However, this would make you over width in many states.
 
I like the guides on the inside, with the front end of the bolster boards low in height and the rear guides higher.  That way when I back into our steep boat ramps, the rear of the guides will not be 12" to 18" underwater where they don't work.


My inside guides are parallel to the trailer and they were never really adjusted close to the toons.  I think they'd work better if they were 4" or so from the toons.  There again, I seldom get my boat out of the boat house and put it on the trailer.

I will look again this week when it's loaded, but as I recall, the guides are pretty much even with the bumper rails on the boat.
