Capsized pontoon boat!

My wife's family lives right there in Commerce Twp.

Not near us. Maybe an hour or so from our downstate home. Kinda in the outskirts of the Detroit metro region.

However, a flipped over tritoon (!) due to hitting another boats wake on that lake? Hmmm…. Someone was not operating safely!

"Someone was not operating safely!"
Well, I'm thinking that too but while the old cliche "accidents can happen" maybe applies here, I have to say, I've been piloting boats now for 35-40 years and a 26' Tritoon Benny for the last 5 1/2 years and I gotta tell ya, I can't quite see how that happened. I'd sure like to see a video.

My guess - severely overloaded. I've seen one too many pontoons looking like there was a family reunion on it, the deck barely above waterline.
See it all the time, but usually going so slow that the temporary submersion is nothing more than a few screams followed by a few laughs and a fresh round of beers.

Rentals are terrible here. All you need is a credit card. I've seen 3-5 year old kids riding on the bow of a toon with No life vest! On a holiday weekend about 20 boats going down the river out to the lake. Front boat was a rental and the *** **** stopped for ducks crossing the river . No more holiday and Saturday boating for us since then

That is an I/O and they have the engine hatch partially raised. The lounger is higher that the driver seat. They must have flooded the engine bay. Broken hoses for raw water or no drain plug. I know what that is like. We have the boat winter serviced and the mechanic normally puts the plug with my keys. He did not and I never thought of it. Luckily we launched and started boating quickly. Soon the engine started running badly and the belts started squealing. Raised the hatch and water up to the crank pulley. Water all over the engine. Found the plug in the boat and jumped in and inserted the plug. It was good that we had not tied the boat in its slip and left. It might have looked like that picture.
I will never make that mistake again.

Actually, I don't think that is a real pic. The guy sitting on the bow looks unconcerned.

Unfortunately, in Michigan anyone who was born prior to 1996 is not required to have a boater’s license. That also explains the number of boat owners that have no clue how to properly operate one.
