so I am on a lake that is having its dam replaced so the water level is about 5 feet lower than normal. where this is causing an issue is there are stumps. some are above the water mark so those are fine. People also have tied floats and put in stakes (driveway markers) into the ones that are below the surface. But not all are marked or visible. the current method people are doing is #1 aluminum boats only, Also pretty much idling with the trim up. Still with that stumps get hit. (so far been lucky , no damage). I have looked and am not seeing any "guards" that have more good reviews than bad or are only for trolling motors. (mine it 40hp). so here is my warped messed up thought. because I dont really care about speed at this point, and at the beginning of summer 2027 is when the water should be back, I am looking for a temporary way to help. This is not what I am doing, but gives in idea.. if I were to make a "V" in the front center going the depth of the prop, in theory a stump will hit that and divert the boat off its path so the stump should miss the prop/motor. drag will be horrible, but I am going uber slow and the lake is only 6 ish miles from end to end.

So thoughts? ideas? flames? past experiences? let the motor die and get a bigger 4 stoke after the water comes back? convert to tritoon?

Google prop guard a few different styles will pop up . Perhaps one of those might help

that is the only one I saw I liked, but it doesnt seem to be available (so maybe there is an issues they found?). plenty of other similar made with plastic and alot of complaints about one hit and its done.

My initial thoughts. Could be wrong, but this is what I am visualizing with your idea. If you have a V type guard in front, it hits a stump at slow speed. Wouldn’t the front then get pushed one way or the other, and in turn wouldn’t that semi-kick the aft of your boat slightly in the opposite direction. Thus, by the time you move forward in space, you may or may not be safe with the aft hitting the stump….?

dang logic.... possibly. but I would think that the outboard stilll being in the water woudl keep the aft from moving left or right. I see your point I wil have to do a few model runs of it to validate. maybe putting it closer to the stern but not enough to cavitate.

They make one up to 50hp and available at west marine. Its a cage around the prop. 13 reviews of 4.9 rating

and then the conventional style for 35 to 70hp engines

Good luck. Keep us posted on what you end up doing

I really wish the 2 were together. the circle one I could see getting caught up a little, the skeg one with the wings I could see it moving it out of the way. But the skeg ones I dont like as the skeg is not meant to be strong. (break the repairable skeg vs the lower unit) so if they were together then I think the protection would be better as stronger. a little steep to buy them both and weld them together. but that might be the way to go.

This is what AI produced for me...... (Version 2) but I think a V Shaped snow plow with a heavy duty bottom edge rail, then vertical bars for strength while letting water pass through could work - AND it would be a great alternative to the sand bags to level out the Benny!!!! A two-fer!

Man I would be on pins and needles the whole time I was on the water! Just knowing that you could hit a stump at any time would drive me nuts!!! I don't think I would boat til the water came back up again!!!

the good part is its an old toon, and the motor is a little tired, so it if goes, it it time to replace it with a newer better faster motor anyway. :) "sorry honey, we need to buy a new motor......" cant wait for the dam to be done. up to a month ago it was tied up in legal so who knew how long it would be.
Dont get me wrong. I am on high alert and freak with each little bump (again only running on idle) have the emergency paddles ready to go.
