Fuel Funnel?

I recently bought a two year old Bennington and this came with it. Can someone tell me what it's for? Is it a fuel funnel? If so, what's the advantage to using it instead of just filling the tank normally?

You have to use that to open the internal valve. Unless your gas can has the same dimensions, the gas will not flow down the tube properly and will take forever.

We haven't filled it up yet so I wasn't aware of the valve. We don't fill from a can but at the Marina with a regular pump nozzle. Would that open the internal valve or do I still need the plastic piece?

Welcome to the forum. It may or may not be necessary. We’ve always filled at a pump (99.9% at the marina with rec fuel near our lake house). We’ve never had an issue fueling and their pump spout must be the right size - appears to simply be a normal gas pump handle/spout. However, many have issues due to the internal environmental design. So many have issues and the funnel is supposed to do what Pbakk mentioned above.

I’d bring it with you the first few times filling up. However, I would just try to fill up normal without it and see if you are fine. If not, then try using it.

Thanks for your help, I never would have guessed that's what it's for. I'll keep it handy for our first fill up and see how it goes. Thanks again.

….and importantly, what Bennington did you get? Pictures? We all get excited with new members and new to them Bennington’s. We hope you have a fun year ahead on the water. Be sure to browse around in here. It is a vast repository of Bennington information. Also a search function in the upper right hand corner as well.

It's a 2022 23LSR. We have a place on Lake Norman, just north of Charlotte NC. We've only had it for a little over a month but have managed to get it out a couple of times in spite of the Winter weather. Looking forward to when it warms up just a bit.

Welcome to the forum Dave! Where are you located on the lake? Did you buy your boat from Lake Norman Marina? We are in between MM11 and 12 on the main channel.....

We did buy it there. We live in Denver, just inside a cove behind Governor's Island. We were out on the lake yesterday poking around the two boats from Queens Landing so sort of over on your side of the lake.

If you come out under that little bridge that goes onto Governors Island go north on the main channel (Turn left) and that goes towards where we live. You had to go around the Point to get to those anchored boats from Queens Landing. Have you found Cocktail Cove yet? It's just north of those boats on the left....

For some reason I just assumed you were up the D Channel. My bad. We've actually been boating on Lake Norman since we moved here 15 years ago but never made it to Cocktail Cove. Used to go hang out at the Sandbar but that's pretty much shut down now. Looking at a map it looks like we weren't too far from Cocktail Cove yesterday so when it gets warmer maybe we'll be able to check it out.

Love your boat setup and colors. Looks like a perfect setup with boat house / lift. Congrats!

Funnel is only if you are having fill issues. I suspect many have either tank venting issues or fuel trapped in one of the many EPA-mandated tank emissions control parts, so the funnel is a cheap solution.

Thankfully I've never had an issue but of course many have. Not sure if it has to do with boat model or what that can create a more susceptible fuel system. It would drive me nuts and I'd probably end up tearing the boat apart to figure it out. My 52 g tank would take forever to fill if I couldn't go full blast.

You've been here longer than us! We've been here just over 10 yrs. But we've been all over this lake!

Thanks, we’re looking forward to the new boat. It replaced a Sweetwater Tritoon we’ve had for the last 10 years. The Bennington is a nice step up.

We tend to stay on this side of the 150 Bridge but I’ve ridden the Dam To Dam jet ski charity ride 5 or 6 times. It goes from the Cowens Ford Dam all the way up to Lookout Shoals so I’ve seen a lot of the lake. Somehow or another however, it always seems like there’s something new to explore. North Harbor Club is a regular lunch run as it’s almost straight across the lake from us. We also used to go to the Landing fairly often but haven’t been there since it changed hands.

I've had the direct fill on my past 2 and got a funnel with them .

I’m not new to boating but some of this Bennington stuff IS new to me. Direct fill is just the normal opening? If so, did you need the funnel? I’m going to have the funnel along anyway but I’m hoping to not do something stupid and get gas all over the side of my spanky clean new boat.

I don't have a pic handy ,you can search I the upper right corner.
No , I did not need a funnel, gas goes directly into your tank . The lid is right in front of your motor .
It must be vented differently .
