I have a customized 23SFX with a 150 Yamaha SHO and considering adding a Rhodan GPS Anchor (or other similar trolling/anchor) to assist with fishing/crabbing exploits in the bay. I continue to receive conflicting reports from dealers with regard to the recommended shaft length and power/strength and was hoping to gather some input from folks who frequent these boards. Many parts our area are current heavy and it isn't uncommon for drift to exceed 4mph.

For Fishing/Crabbing - looks amazing. Sorry, no first hand help - but I did see this FAQ:

Given these Toons are windsails, the 36V with a LOT more thrust (55 vs 80 vs120) would seem the right answer and again consistent with the FAQ recommendation. I could not find out if the system works on Lithium...I would pass if they do not. Lighter and a LOT more power.

I can send my address for a box of Crabs!! :)
 
Thanks Laurence - I have that same formula....but receive conflicting advice at is applies to Toons...more and more are on the water holding fixed positions and the performance opinions seem vary depending on what motors are in stock/sponsored by the marinas I've asked. Part of the reason I popped over here....cost more to ship crabs to LA that to but them there lol....we get plenty that's for sure. Rarely coming off the water without at least 3-4 dozen, usually closer to 6-10.
 
Keep peaking back in for replies. We do have a number of members that have discussed this topic before and are knowledgeable. Just a slow time of year in the group. Also, have you done a search yet (upper right corner) in the forum? Certainly other similar threads about trolling motors (lenght/power) that have been addressed in the past. You may find it having already been answered enough for you to make a decision.

Unfortunately, we don’t fish, so no trolling motor or knowledge of them on my part. Good luck!!!


And goodness….often 6-10 dozen crabs. That seems like a crazy amount. Enjoy.
 
As far as Rhodan goes, they have mixed reviews with the saltwater crowd. Constantly failing parts. Not as good as competitors. Spotty customer service.

As far as shaft length that has to do with several factors including where you're mounting it and what kind of sea state you expect. If you're trying to hold in 3 footers while the trolling motor is bow-mounted you might need a 72". But in calm water a 60" might be more than enough.

Power is partly a function of the the conditions you'll be facing, but also your available room for batteries and of course budget. More power requires more volts and/or reserve capacity. Again you could probably get away with a 24v setup with a single lithium or two small lead batteries, but in a snotty environment a 36v setup might be required with more batteries for all day trolling.

Some of these questions can only be answered by getting into the weeds.

I have a Minn Kota terrova 112lb 36v. It works awesome on my 24 sslx w/sps package. Spot locks no problem and holds the boat in place

Did you have a custom mount? Looks to be off of the deck, was a quick pass....
 
60”. I made a custom under deck mount similar to a hitch/receiver setup
