Thanks - very helpful. I didn't even think of using my phone hotspot to update the software.

Although I periodically update the Garmin in my car have never updated my Garmin in the boat. No new roads underwater but perhaps updates for display or other functionality

Besides the "underwater roads" ,the updates also include POI, gas ,docks ramps etc

Never considered it either. But updates to water depth and POI would be nice...as well as clearing any software bugs/snags that may impact streamlined performance of the unit over time. Thanks for sharing this video so I can do it later this summer. Nice!

Here’s a stupid question from a new person. Do the Simrads come with a memory card from the dealer or do I need to purchase one and put it in before running the updates? Haven’t gotten my boat yet and just want to be prepared for when the snow melts.

There is a "Map SD Card/Chip " from the factory . It is located in the back of the unit .
I have not done it yet ,but eventually I am going to upgrade mine to a Navionics chip/card
