Well Gang,
Been a bit since I've been here. We've been traveling and finally got back and spent some time at home. And that means, time to take the BOAT OUT! Yahoooooo! Well, it wasn't too long after we'd launched the boat and we were just cruising around when I noticed the little *Engine* icon on the tach dash. I'd not seen that before so, I broke out my quick reference plasticized sheet and found it. It's an icon that appears when there's apparently some sort of maintenance or service to attend to. Well, I just did about 99.9999% of that maintenance including engine oil and filter change, fuel filter change, spark plug change and outdrive oil change. Heck, due to a damaged fitting, I even changed out all my power steering oil too! Oh, I also changed out the water pump impeller. So, at present, I can't think of any regular maintenance that I haven't done, that needs to be done. But, I'm just a user, not a Benny tech.

I tried just shutting down the engine a time or two and then a re-start to see if that had any effect on that little icon and nope, not happening. Sooo, just wondering, any of you boys got any ideas on how to loose that icon other than take the big girl into the dealer and get charged a bunch for them to put a computer on it for 5 minutes? Now, one important point here. Since we happen to have that infamous F-350XCB 350HP 5.3L V-8, and it has that senario where the flywheel has to be replaced after a given amount of hours of running between 3,800 and 4,200 rpms, I don't think I'm anywhere near that limit yet. I forgot just how many hours it needs to operate at that rpm range before the ECM will post a notice on the dash it's reached the limit and time for a flywheel change and ECM re-program, FOR FREE, for the rest of the owners (and boats) life.

Anyone got any ideas, I'd surely appreciate it.

Interesting read about the F350 flywheels, lots of info out there. It seems every 80-100 hours of running at that specific RPM it needs to be replaced. Definitely a DIY project if you can get the free flywheel from Yamaha.

Hey guys,
Thanks for chiming in here. Yes, I'm fairly sure the flywheel change is not overly technical or requires no special tools but, I've not done that project yet. And, even though I've got more tools etc. than I care to admit and definitely have enough wrenching experience, I probably won't do that flywheel job because, while it's only moderately inconvenient, I'll haul the big girl down to the Benny service center near me and let them do it. The prime reason is, the engine ECM is what detects and logs the hours of the 3600-4200 rpm range at which the high frequency vibration takes place. And, when the 80 hours at that specific rpm range is attained, it then sends a signal to the dash to let the owner know it's time for a flywheel change.

But, at that same time, the ECM must be RESET back to zero for the time/rpm accumulation. I have no way of resetting that ECM. So, that's why I'd go ahead and let the dealer do the flywheel change. Besides, all of that is on Yamaha. There's absolutely zero cost to the owner. And, according to the head tech at my local Benny shop, he has yet to see any owner bring in a Benny with the accumulated 80 hours reached at that time/rpm. And, unless there's some secret buttons press procedure in the Tach to locate the "at present" amount of hours accumulated in that time/rpm range, I have no idea on just how long I've ran in that rpm range. Sooooo, with all that being said, all we can do is run the boat and when the notification pops up on the dash that we've reached the 80 hours, we'll then take it in and have the flywheel change done, along with the ECM reset. And one more thing, since this is all on Yamaha, and they have acknowledged the issue and are taking care of business to assist every single owner of the F-350 350HP 5.3L V-8 in keeping with happy and reliable ownership, that the ONLY way to keep all parties happy is for YAMAHA or it's reps, like Benny, to do the labor of the flywheel change AND the ECM reset.

Wonder if that light can be reset like you do for a normal service interval light on the tach and the mode buttons etc?

As long a Yamaha takes care of you, let them do the work and be worry free!
