Motor Alarms or lack there of.

I was reading in a Boat US magazine about engine failures and one of the points mentioned was that when you first start your motor you should hear the alarms beep which would indicate that they are working and ready to alert you to a failure. I tried that this AM on our boat and nothing happens in the first key position.It seems the accessories are on. Everything works fine no issues just would like to know that if there is a failure that I will be notified. Is there another way to check that I am not aware of?
