New Light Weight Box Anchor

I’m testing out this new light weight Aluminum Box Style anchor this weekend. It weighs 12 lbs (a box or slide anchor the same size weighs over 30 lbs) and it go's from collapsed to assembled in 12 second's.

(im sure you could do it faster but that's what it to me the put it together the 2nd time I played with it) It collapses in 7 seconds.

"The Leader". The round metal bar @ the front of the Anchor seems to be where all the weight is. So it could even weigh less if that was made from Aluminum. But 12 Lbs seam's Very reasonable compared to 30lbs for the slide anchor.

The goal was to get a lighter/easier to handle box anchor. My Small box anchors make me very nervous when taking them in and out of the water when it comes to messing up the boat. They are not light and that makes it easy for them to swing where you don't want them and cause damage.

I will let you know how this one works out

That looks pretty cool! Was it store bought or hand made?

Carl: Its kind of Both.

The Traditional heavy box anchors work very well. I wanted somthing light weight and so I got together with Josh @ Hour Glass Anchors and he was willing to make this custom Aluminum one off anchor. If it works out well he will go into production.

Keep me (or everyone) informed of the progress.

I tryed out the new anchor for the first time yesterday and it worked great. The anchor did not move a inch. The big difference was the ease of taking it out and setting it up. You would not think the anchor sets up as easy as the box but On my opinion it's easyer to set up because its lighter and easier to handle.

Also when it came time to pull it in the weight difference is huge. As it comes out of the water it's so much lighter that its super easy to handle.

Here you can see the size and shape difference between the box and the Hourglass

I just picked up a box anchor yesterday. I like the thought of a lighter anchor. How long are you going to test this?

AWK

I will keep testing this for a while. On another fourm Im active some people have brought up some other anchors to test. And some intresting questions.

Grant, I was going to suggest that you grind out and weld up the stress cracks from being bent but the later pictures look like you have done this. Good luck with your R&D. Steve

The T-6061 Aluminum cracked when it was bent. But this was just a proto type and rather then weld and make it look pretty I just wanted to test it. Then when we found that the Anchor worked well he re-made the anchor in Aluminum that dosen't crack when bent. The Production anchor is what the pictures with the grey back ground are.

Like the looks of this anchor. Is it designed for shallow water and silt bottoms? We tend to drag our large mushroom through deep silt and tire of resetting anchor on windy days.
