The other day my wife and I were out cruising and lounging. There was another 'toon nearby; Three boys were jumping into the water, mom was lounging, dad at the helm. Soon, dad started the motor while two of the boys held onto the deck and strakes as he put it in gear. The boys seemed to enjoy being pulled along through the water as dad picked up speed until one boy let go. We watched, hoping and praying that we were not going to be witnesses to a horrific injury if one of the kids hit the prop.

I've seen stupid stunts over the years, but this had to take the cake.

I've said it once, and I'll say it again, Stupidity knows no boundaries!  Talk about idiotic.

A friend owns an outdoor store and his motto is "STUPID OUGHTA HURT!" I definitely agree with him but it shouldn't lead to the kinds of potential injuries or possible death from this.

That's even worse than seeing people sitting on the deck in the front with their feet/legs dangling over the edge...............while underway. Unreal!

If someone is in the water swimming or floating we remove the keys from the ignition and put it in the cup holder. No mistakes!

Was it a jet boat or one of the new forward facing prop? Not discounting the stupidity, just curious.

The problem is those kids grow up thinking that is ok. Stupidity is hereditary. Eventually it will cause injury somewhere in the family tree. Sad.

I was thinking the same thing but he said it was another toon nearby........then they were grabbing the strakes........

Without seeing it myself I will reserve comment.

I was raised on a farm where we permanently removed many of the safety shields on the equipment for serviceability reasons.

Can't say there were no close calls, but made it through with all my extremities intact!

Safety is important, but we have gone far overboard, and the result is we are raising a bunch of pansies. :(

Some of the most important lessons leave scars as reminders.

My experience with boats prior to buying our toon was a 26' SeaRay that belonged to a friend. I know the strakes on a regular hull, but what are the little wing like things on the front end of the toons called?

Thanks for sharing this. I often tell my kids you can either listen (read in the case of your comments above) or learn it the hard way.

I would not allow anyone dragging along in the water from my boat,

but others are free to do as the wish on theirs.

Adults are one thing. Kids another. I would think any lake patrol anywhere would intervene if they saw that. Endangerment laws exist for this very reason.

Unless it was your kids on "that" boat ... correct ......  ;)

I'll have to confess that, like Bill N., I did some things that only a daredevil would do. I have a few scars and I have a bad back from some of those stupid moves, but I've also gotten a little more safety conscious in my older age. I used to love watching the idiots crash on skateboards and bicycles, but now, I cringe when watching, and have to turn it off when I see their head bang against the concrete or something else.

Yeah I think we have all done some stupid guy things. I was a passenger in a buddy's car doing 165mph at night once. Fun, but pretty dumb. I now have more to live for and have those who depend on me so that changes ones mindset. I can't get over those who ride motorcycles without helmets. You can here in Michigan but with all the nuts texting and driving, deer, it isn't worth it in my mind. Unless you're Link and want to feel the wind through your hair...oops, never mind.
