Sept 1st is always bittersweet for me. Today would have been my dads 76th opening day of duck/ early goose season (he would have been 88 and started hunting when he was 12 but passed away in 2009), but my uncle (my dads brother) is 86 and today was his 74th consecutive opening day of hunting season. He originally didn't want to go as there weren't many geese around but we set decoys on a long shot in a field and made him keep his streak alive.

I like to think my dad made a few geese make a mistake and came into our decoys. We ended up with 5.

My dad lived and breathed waterfowl hunting. He chased them from Michigan, Ohio, Ontario, all the way to Texas during Christmas. He even was Midwest recognized wooden decoy carver.

If you need a road trip, we have many geese on Keowee and Hartwell year-round. They flock-up in the fall and spring, but too many don't go anywhere! Have a single adult visiting us that can't fly. It's eating well enough, bird seed and critter corn. Expect the fox, yots or eagle will get it if it can't join the group soon.

Best of luck filling the freezer!

Thank you! Yeah, that single doesn't have much of a long term future if it can't fly. As long as they have open water near them, they won't migrate. We have many that are local that set here year round on the golf course and if the bay and ponds don't freeze over, they won't go south. Been some mild winters around so the local population has grown. The early season here in Michigan was only from Sept 1st to Sept 10th, but with the boom of the population and warm winters, it goes the whole month of Sept now. Limits went from 2 per person to now 5 per person per day.
