Looking at a SJ 4000 wi-fi cam to use not only for tubing and watersports in general but as a backup camera as well.   I already have a go-pro but rarely use it since you don't know what you are shooting till you get home and view the footage.  Normally it isn't shooting what I thought it was and the video footage is a waste.  The sj has a viewfinder on the back that should make it a lot nicer to see what you are actually getting for pics or video footage.

SJCAM 4000 Wi-Fi  <--- the one I'm looking at

Description for the sjcam says it's wi-fi enabled and can be controlled via an andriod or iOS device.  My only question is will I need internet access to be able to control and view images with this camera?  Will the app have to be on a smart phone that has internet or can it be used from my tablet with the app installed on it?

Sorry for all the stupid questions but I'm a bit challenged with the smart phone apps and things as I have an old antique cell phone that is lucky to make calls some days.

Search SJ4000. Dave I think posted about it. My recollection all positive.

I have some early post on this you can look up. I have used them for the past couple of years. There is a slight difference in quality but not enough to make the price difference in my opinion. I am very pleased with the video I have shot. I use it to record the grandkids tubing and also as my rear view cam. I also have used mine scuba diving and had no leaking issues. The Wi-Fi works great with my Samsung Galaxy and my Apple I pad air. The only issue I had with one was the battery terminals. I pulled the terminals out of the camera trying to pull the battery out. You can repair if you are good at solder. I started using an electronics type lubricant on the terminals to make the battery easier to pull. The overall quality of the GoPro is a little better as far as construction but saying that I have had 1 GoPro break and 1 to quit working. They come with all types of connectors to mount about any way you want. I have mine mounted on the stern light on the bimi top. That works great unless you put a flag on the light pole then you get vibration in your video. I have recommended to many friends that are happy with the purchase and I would recommend again. If you shop on eBay or amazon you can find very good deals on them. Make sure you get one that says Wi-Fi because I have seen some out there without it. I use the free GoPro software off the GoPro website to edit video. Works great and is free. There are several videos on YouTube with examples of the quality.

Ok you say the wi-fi works great with an ipad air or samsung galaxy....I get that part but do you need internet on your ipad or samsung to make this work.  Like I said I'm challenged when it comes to this kind of thing.  Will the app connect to the cam without any internet available?  My main goal is to mount the cam on the back and use my ipad to control it while shooting video of the kids tubing and also a rear facing camera for backing up at our docks.  Found the wi-fi model on b&h for less than $80 (white being the cheapest then silver then black) I don't care what color it is as long as it works fine.

Nope...it connects to Wi-fi

I have them and they work awesome for 1/4-1/3 the price of a GoPro AND they have a color screen on them. MAKE SURE to get a genuine one though, lots of clones out there.

Myers, they create a wifi network with your wireless phone/iPad/etc...

Check B&H or Adorama Camera. They used to have them. I buy a lot of stuff from them and their shipping/service is outstanding.

To be sure; you are saying that WiFi not needed similar to the way my cell connects to Garmin in car without WiFi, correct

Think of it as Bluetooth.

Think of it as Bluetooth.

Which is wireless, but just uses "blue" radio waves vs "yellow" waves in the radio spectrum.......  :D   :D

Mounted mine on the stern light pole on the bimi top. I had to move my flag from this pole to another. It caused vibration in the video from the flag waving. Works great here. It gives you a wide shot of the lake behind you and gets all of the kids crazy tubing.

Where are the videos? I'm thinking about finally getting one of these myself.

If you search under Chris Tays on YouTube you will find 3 videos. 2 of them the camera was mounted on the side rail and they are smooth. The other video the camera is mounted on the stern light with my flag on it. You can see the vibration making a little fuzzy. I am very pleased with the 2 I have. I will try to upload some of the ones I took without the flag when I get a chance.
