I have a Striker 4 and I wired it into the accessory switch (with the stereo, etc). So, using the separate switch like you asked should be just fine.
I use it constantly to keep an eye on depth since our lake it's pretty shallow. I also look at the gps speed a lot too. So, for me, it made sense to run it all off the one switch instead of having to switch multiple switches "on" each time.
Ok. So I’m pretty illiterate when it comes to electrical. I have a 2019 ssbxp and not sure what actually needs to be done to run it to the switch. Is there any materials or tutorials available to walk step by step?
If you can find someone to help you, I wired the ground of the Striker to a ground under the helm. Then I ran the power lead on the Striker to the "switched" side of the switch. I used some simple wire taps, like these, to make the connections. There are better ways to do this, but this was quick and easy, and works.
If you google "How can I wire accessories to my boat console," you will find several you tube videos and other information to help you wire that Striker like a pro. Just be sure to kill power to the console before attempting to plug a wire into that accessory switch.
