Not here, I carry a portable VHF. Just curious how do you plan on routing the mic cable to the blackbox through the helm? A permanent setup might be something I consider down the road if taking longer trips.

Plus 1 on the handheld.

There is a cutout in the helm next to the railing.that is where I ran the wires for my chart plotter

I have a Uniden MHS126 Submersible Handheld Two Way VHF Marine Radio.
Its 12 years old ,so Im sure there are new models now .

It works fine , I use it every time weather conditions look like they could be changing.

What do you use for a handheld? I was thinking fixed unit for more power.

Yeah mines a 6W Floating West Marine. Pretty generic, no bells and whistles. More power would be better but for my area of boating you're within sight of land so 6W is plenty. One advantage is that it floats so if you somehow have a catastrophic mishap and your boat is upside down, this floater could give you an option for help.

But if I ever plan on heading out to the open Chesapeake or looping with this boat, I'll upgrade to a fixed for more power.
