What is the best way to clean and then apply bottom paint on pontoons, and best product to use, thanks

Clean would be power wash ,if that doesnt work acid wash .
What paint to use , I cant answer that , but someone else may respond .
Currently I am beginning the process of getting Hull Jacket applied .

Cleaning is almost always a pressure washer. Paint will depend on where and how you boat. If there is any local dealer to consult with usually is best bet. Example on my boat in salt water is ablative paint by Pacifica Plus. Also check with fellow boaters near you for helpful advise.

Just going through the process myself. Met with a bottom painting, so-called expert. The steps he recommends are first wipe down the painting area with a cleaner such as acetone, second light sanding, and then blow any dust off of the pontoons with a blower. third paint on a minimum two coats of an aluminum safe solid primer. fourth they sell an aluminum safe Pontoon grey color ablative paint for saltwater use.

When you do the antifouling paint, I would recommend 2 colors. A base color of something like red or whatever and then your final color as the top coat. That way you know when its getting worn out in places. Interlux Trilux 33 is a good choice for pontoon boats

I see the Hull Jacket is their new product, how did you decide on that over their other products? Are you lifting the boat to get everything underneath?

Since mine stays in the water all season ( 5-6 months ) Im going with the Hull Jacket . I have been told ( Frank at SG Marine ) that it should last at least 5 years vs Metal Jacket which is basically their equivalent of Sharkhide. I never had an issue with the Sharkhide , other than I have had it reapplied every other year. Yes it will be lifted as it was previously when Sharkhide was reapplied. Since this is my dealers 1st application of Hull Jacket , SG Marine is sending a rep to instruct and assist in the application. It also requires the Sharkhide to be completely removed which will be done when the surface is scuffed. Everything thing that is not getting the application is covered and the material is sprayed on .
That was probably my longest post ever. LOL

What is your cost for this product? I am still looking for a local shop that will lift a pontoon.

Just about 4K. There's a lot of labor involved with the 1st application. Scuffing and removing the sharkhide then wrapping the boat, which would be every application.

Is this primarily a cosmetic thing to avoid oxidation?

Bennington now uses their Metal Jacket instead of Sharkhide.

Well I am probably the most frequent poster here on Metal Jacket. There is a thread somewhere on the forum with pictures. When I joined this forum it was Sharkhide all the way. I went with the top Metal jacket option and my boat stays in fresh water all year. Wow it is amazing and it cleans up easily. I even had an issue with a small areas of a 23Q flacking and it is getting redone under warranty. I am very happy with my OCD allowing me to present the boat like I want and the company standing behind a small issue

Do you go with the Metal Jacket or the Hull Jacket ?
Frank at S-G told me that since I leave mine in the slip all season ,Hull Jacket is the way to go .

OK my apologies to all, I did get the Hull Jacket installed not the XL. Guess i should read my invoices better :)
I went back and looked at your previous thread .
You have Hull Jacket correct ?

The S-G scheduler just called my dealer but the service manager was out of the office . It wont be long now .
