Has anyone boated this area? Family is thinking about a week at a lake house there this summer. Trail earring looks like interstate all the way so that should (might) be okay; looks like about a six hour trip. Wondering if anyone has local knowledge of boating on this water?.....

Awesome, double post.... Oh well, I'm a newbie...

Not the first, wont be the last

Smith Lake area is easy to get to from the north, as you get off the interstate about 140 miles south of Nashville--40 miles north of Birmingham.  It's a good 20 miles off the interstate at Cullman to where many homes are.

Smith is a lake with very steep lots--kind'a down in a hole.  There are many, many coves and sloughs, and it's a pretty place.  The big money of Birmingham often have homes on this lake--and a couple of others east and southeast of their city.

Another option would to find a place to stay on the Tennessee River, the #1 cruising river in the U.S. with 650 miles of navigable water.  There are many state park resorts and rental cabins available without having to go all the way to Smith Lake.

TruTex, I'm on Guntersville Lake (part of TN river) and is beautiful.  The area has a lot of rental housing available including floating condo's, villas at State Park like Bamaman indicated....there is also several camp grounds on the water.....lots to do and see.  If you're an oldie...Jeff Cook (from Alabama) has a house on the lake.

Guntersville also has the Hampton Inn and the Windham hotels--both with boat docks--right in the middle of town.

The sunset view from the room decks at the Guntersville State Park is absolutely incredible on a clear night this time of year.  It looks like you can see for 30 miles from up on top of that  mountain.
