Often when I start the engine, the tach goes way high and even higher when throttle is applied.

If I shut it off and restart it goes back to normal. Anyone looked into this?

Well, first we'll need to know what you have, model, engine, gauge package, etc.

But from past experience with marine tachs, there is a selector switch on the back of most tachs for 4, 6, or 8 cylinder engines, i would try checking to make sure it is firmly set to the correct setting, or even moving it through the different settings to make sure it is making good contact when set properly. Kind of like a scratchy volume control on an old stereo, work it back and forth a few times and it clears up.
