looking to upgrade from a yamaha 90HP to the 150HP, which the boat claims is the max engine size. and i have some questions surrounding the transom size, and if i need 20" or 25" shaft... it looks like what im reading from Bennington that it has the 20" transom... dealer is saying that with the bigger engine, to go with the longer shaft...

has anyone with this boat configuration, either with the 150HP, or upgrade to the 150? and what shaft size are you using??

thanks guys... appreciate any input on this one.

You could contact Bennington to see what they recommend. Here is their number 888 906 2628.
If you do call , have your Hull ID.
They may not respond right away ,this is their busy season due to boat shows .

My 2011 2275 RCW with the twin Elips with a 150hp Merc Pro XS was a 20" Long shaft transom. Short shafts are 15", Long shafts are 20", XL shafts are 25", and XXL are 30" shafts. Either call Bennington as Jack said or call Yamaha with your current engine serial / model number and see what shaft length it is. Bennington may have upgraded transom sizes in your newer year model then my 2011 boat. You could probably google your serial number of current motor and find shaft length. I believe Yamaha actually has either a L or a X in the model number which would tell you if its a 20 or 25" shaft.
F150TLRD would be a long shaft engine, while F150TXRD would be an extra-long shaft.

Motor shaft length should not change depending on HP. They should be the same length no matter what motor you go with. I would ask your dealer why they would want a longer shaft with a new motor?
Obviously you'll suffer more with a shorter shaft then a longer one. Too short it will blow out in turns, won't be able to trim as much to get optimum performance. Longer shaft will just drag and reduce performance and could cause porpoising.

Now, it may or may not be something you want or may not even be available anymore, or even available for your 2015 22slx model, but in 2014, Bennington came out with (at least for my 2275 RCW), a new package that allowed you to remove the capacity of 1 person from your coast guard capacity plate and increase the motor size from 150hp to 200hp. It would have taken my capacity tag from 13 people to 12 and I don't think I ever had more then 9 or 10 people on my boat for the 13 years I owned it.

As we all know on this forum, we love spending other peoples money
Here was a conversation I had with Spicer's Marina in Houghton Lake where I bought my boat in 2011. Note the labor charges were including swapping out the standard bimini top with new rearward curved one they came out with just after I bought my boat. The mega pan and modified wave tamer were about $1500 in parts. I don't know what the breakdown to just install that vs that and new bimini top were, but the total for all was $840 bucks.

If your looking at upgrading the motor to the biggest one you can hang on the transom, this might be something you want to ask Bennington about and potentially getting another 50hp bigger motor.
