The SkegGuard product will add toughness and drag to your lower unit. The extra drag might be worth it if you expect to take another hit. Most professional repair facilities will remove the lower units and send it off to the their prop repair specialist for weld repair. Of course a new lower unit is possible but most will not consider it to be cost effective.That "should" work ,I have seen others use them . If not, it could be time to call your insurance co.
Where do you get the right piece to weld it on?Another option is a weld repair. That's an easy one for a good welder.
I was worried about drilling into area of the lower unit as well. Kinda scares me and that’s why I posted this.They work but you will lose some speed and efficiency. Also I personally don't like the idea of drilling into virgin areas of my lower unit.
Cost effective and DIY is the advantage. But the proper repair is to weld. While the lower unit is off you can also change the gear oil, replace the impeller etc. if overdue.
Marine dealers can get 'blanks' of various sizes which are cast alum like your existing skeg. Simply shape wit cutting wheel. I've seen welders have success with 1/4" alum plate, again cut to fit.Where do you get the right piece to weld it on?
