Lots of posts on this issue. I would recommend doing a search if not already - likely the solution already exists out there in one of these threads. Many have to do with vent location and it sucking in water instead of air as fuel is burned. When tanks are collapsing that also is a clue that the tank venting system is blocked/clogged. When you open you fill cap, the fill vent allows air into the tank and you might hear a sucking sound. Again that's due to your other vent (with charcoal canister) being blocked somehow.
This seems to be a frequent enough problem that there should be a sticky somewhere on this site if not already. And while manufacturers have to be careful about admitting design issues, having the dealer network armed with a TSB would go a long way in making sure customer experiences remain positive!
