How do I tell someone not to smoke on the boat nicely?

We put the Benny in this weekend at the lakefront home we are building.  Relatives came up the first day and brought a huge container of cheez balls on the boat.  The next day, a friend hopped on the boat and started lighting up cigs (without asking if it was ok), then when we were getting off the boat, stepped up on the seats with his shoes on to step off the boat (that wasn't necessary) and he's a big guy.

Since this is all new to me - how do I tell someone what is and isn't acceptable on the boat.  Do I make an announcement before getting on - something like "if you want to smoke do it now because no smoking on the boat"?

Standing on the seats with shoes (or for that matter without) bugs me too.

What are your rules and how do you enforce them without coming off rude?

You are the captain .You make the rules .If they dont like them, tell them to go buy their own boat and they can make the rules .

Ha, absolutely NO orange snacks on my boat, I learned the hard way :)   The stepping on the seat like that is just poor manners by the offender, it is difficult to police that all the time.

Put a big NO SMOKING ON BOAT sign at the dock so people see it :)

If not, just make an announcement that there is no smoking on the Pontoon boat as the repairs are just too expensive.

We tell people the shoe bin is under the front seat. They always get the hint. Hard to step on a seat with shoes if you're not wearing any.

Cigarettes are addictive, so people aren't as likely to be polite. You'll have to ask him if he minds not smoking on the boat. Then don't invite him anymore if he ignores you!

^^^ This. My shoe bin is also under the front corner seat, and everyone has to put theirs in before they get on the boat. I have only had to tell one person not to smoke on my boat, but it was not a big deal. They complied and waited until we beached.

Cheese-its, cheese balls, anything yellow  NOT ALLOWED  Smoking? NO WAY. Shoes soft ones only. NO FLIP FLOPS.  Standing on the cushions. NOT ON MY BOAT. Do you go to their house and stand on their chairs, WITH SHOES ON? What kind of an A>> H>>> is this person. Have another ride? I don't think so. I don't consider myself a hard a>> but you've got to get with people that have a great deal of consideration for other's belongings

Gotta set the rules before they step on or before underway. Smoking in our toon is only allowed off the swim platform or sitting to the rear on sun deck. Then again, wife's a smoker so we are probably a little more lenient. Shoes come off when stepping on, OR we throw down a towel as some people aren't as comfortable bare footed.

I'm the captain, and the owner, and just like I tell my employees, if I can do it, so can you!!!

As for food, we are kinda lenient. Towel down, wet wipes handy, and they know "don't touch ANYTHING till you clean your hands".

First welcome. With that said, you must be a nice person. I sure would not be concerned about being rude if someone lit a smoke on my boat. I would consider their actions as rude and waste no time in telling them to put it out. Frankly, as soon as I saw someone pulling out a smoke, I would shut them down. I don't care to much as to footwear. However, climbing on the seats---WTF---Were you raised in a barn, would be my response. I am known for being very direct. It is your boat. You are the captain and you set the rules. No need to worry if you are rude. People should respect your property and rules. If not, as I stated in another post, direct them to the mistletoe hanging from your shirt tail.

Cheers, Steve

If you see smoke on your boat then grab the fire extinguisher. Shouldn't be a problem after that.
You mean while the guy is smoking, right? That's awesome!

Very simple.......just tell them. Sorry there's no smoking on the boat. Period!

Sorry there's no cheese balls, doodles, Doritos, chocolate, cupcakes, anything that can stain the upholstery and carpet......just explain why. They'll understand.

Also......nothing to drink than can spill and stain. Red wine, kool aid, orange soda, etc. They'll understand.

Seats are for butts!

You spent a lot of money on YOUR boat. I know you want everybody to enjoy themselves. But everybody has to respect your wishes and your rules on YOUR BOAT!!!

I was thinking along the same lines. Just use a squirting gun and shot him in the face and drench his cherry.

I have 2 brother in laws who smoke but neither have never done so on my boat. I like to think it's because they can see I have a nice boat and I keep it looking really nice. So in your case, if that guy actually has the balls to smoke on your boat I would absolutely take that as an insult. Full disclosure though...I cannot stand smokers.

An oar to the face has less margin of missing. Squirt gun in the wind might take 3 or test shots to get it right.

Are you guys kidding me?

Gotta say, LOVE this topic!! Now I can show my wife and say "see, I'm not the only one with a bunch of rules!!" as for the smoker, definitely wouldn't happen on mine either, heck I don't let people get in my car immediately following having a cigarette because it still stinks. One idea, get an old tube, take the nice nylon cover off it so it is just the pvc bladder, and offer that to smokers. If they are SO comfortable with not worrying about accidentally burning a hole in the seat or floor, see how comfortable they are with it knowing that if it DOES somehow fall and burn a hole, they are swimming to shore.

I have NO problem telling them to stop and.....

One of our friends is a bigger guy and he was sitting on the top of the seat at the bow. My wife handled that one and he understood. Some people just don't think. We don't know anyone who smokes so that is not an issue for us. We always have everyone kick their shoes off at the dock. Being on my boat is not a right, it's a privilege.

This is me! If you are abusing what I've worked hard to pay for, you'll get a direct rule thrown in your face, nice or not. I'm careful, considerate, and respectful of others' property, and demand that others be that same way with mine.

Someone wants to step on my seat, much less with their shoes, I'd probably tell them to get their feet off my seat, and that when we get back to the shore, we'll see how they like if when I go walking across their car seats with my stinking shoes on.

I've got a sign by my hot tub that reads: "I don't soak in your toilet. Don't pee in my spa!"

I've got it! If they pull out their cigarettes, stop them and say, "here, I'll show you to the smoking section," then walk over and open the port side gate, "it's out there" should be a good enough message.

Wait until they are about to light it up and hit them in the face with a blast of CO2 from the fire ext. They will get the hint even if you don't have to pull the pin if they are looking at the muzzle of it. ;)
