Winter has arrived in Northern Michigan

I'll probably get the dock in next week and wait a couple more weeks on the lift.

Just found a pic of Mullett

With less ice cover we should see an earlier spring and warmer summer temps. Both of which I welcome with open arms after the last two cooler summers. Bring on the heat!

Inland lakes  up here are  still covered ,that pic ( above post )  is Little Traverse Bay in Downtown Petoskey

Looks like it is not going to be a good year for Maple Syrup .

I have had 68 taps out for a week now and only collected 25 gallons of sap .

I like the early spring ,but there goes one of my hobbies .

Oh well ,one of the others will start sooner . :D

What factors influence flow? Temperature?

For it to run ,it needs to warm during the day and below freezing at night .

Our only  shot right now is Thursday night we have a projected low of 29 .

My boat dealer ( who I got into sapping ) just now called .He pulled all of his taps ( maybe 20-25)  yesterday and did his cook .

He got 26 gallons of sap ,cooked it for 16 hours ,for a half gallon of syrup .

He is no where close to what we do .

We wont even start to cook until we have over 150 gallons of sap .

We currently have about 165 gallons from 170 taps ,going to start to cook today

It is sure a lot of work but man is it good stuff. I wish I had some land with nice maple trees on it. It is quite rewarding to use natures resources.

The lot we purchased in Indian River last summer ,has all of 2 maples on it .

We have close to 100 on this one now

Terrible year for Maple Syrup . :(

I have had 68 taps out for 2 weeks and I have only collected 73 gallons of sap .

Years past I can collect that in one day

If we can get at least 150 gallons for the weekend we will have one more boil ,then pull the taps Sunday/Monday

Ice is going out ,however it is snowing right now up here
