Winter has arrived in Northern Michigan

The Crooked River up here doesn't freeze ,there are a few from a local watering hole that go out every New Years Day .

Wow. Don't think I'd be heading out without at least a life vest on. You go overboard in that water and your gonna sink fast. Better them than me .....

Our lake is still open but that might change with the cold front that is on its way. I guess the faster it gets here the faster it leaves right?

They may have went right from the "watering hole " to the water .

Just think, don't need ice for the cooler! Just throw the beer in the bait bucket and throw it in the water. And if you do want ice cubes, raise the trim up high and back into the ice. :D

Man, I grew up in the Buffalo area and remember those times.  Glad I did it at 16 and not 61!

The good news is: only 13 more days until the days start getting longer!

Finally .... but it's also officially winter then .... bittersweet.

The truck displayed 1 degree on the way into work this morning. Yesterday was the first time ice fisherman were out on the lake. Hopefully in another 8-10 weeks it will all be gone!

Yeah. Too soon for my butt to get on the ice. Only two reasons to be on the ice this early. 1) you really really love fishing. 2) you really really hate your wife.

Another went through yesterday ,he was able to make it .

But the guy in Montmorency County didn't make it. :-(

It boggles my mind on why some get out on the ice so early.

The small lakes up here just froze over  a week ago at the most . Burt & Mullet are still wide open

It's been more than a month since anyone posted to this topic. It's 1/23/17 and 99% of our snow has melted here in NW lower Michigan. It smells like mud outside and sounds like birds chirping.

Still knee deep here . Had a meeting yesterday to decide if we are going to tap  the trees or not this year .Doesn't look good for a syrup year .No decision made yet

Was in Traverse City through last Monday and we had just over a foot there when we left. Not as much as most years. Was supposed to be warming and get freezing rain, so not sure what is there now. All snow here in Wixom has been gone for a while and we have been extremely socked in with fog every day this week - a couple days it lasted all day.

Hello fellow Michiganders. The warm up has sure been nice but it has been foggy down here. I was hoping for more rain to help melt the lake ice.
