Winter has arrived in Northern Michigan

Great news. Hoping other areas of the state get their version of good news with all the flooding in regional areas.

The water levels had dropped a bit overnight . But an area near the black river was evacuated this morning. Hopefully with the power plant running the levels will drop in that area soon. .

We didn’t have any destructive spring ice pushes on the lake this year. Just flooding like everywhere else. Here are two pictures of our lake. It has never been to the top of our 4’ sea wall. For the last 5 years or more, it’s probably been 1.5-2’ below it easily. This year it’s flush, with the dam wide open. So we join those now a bit worried. Hopefully no storm push our way until the level comes down. My understanding is it’s supposed to be rain free at Houghton Lake most of the upcoming week. We’ll get up there for the first time in over 2 months in another week.

Its from both Andy . 3 maybe 4 , weeks ago this weekend is when we got the 50 inches. The only place it hasn't melted is the heavily wooded areas . . Except for 1 day last week ,its rained everyday for the past 8-10 days . They should be able to make some headway this week with no rain in the forecast until Friday .
Is all the water due to heavy snow melt or a lot of rain?

We had both a lot of snowfall, but probably more importantly, usually high amounts of early spring rain. Torrential storms…and storm damage, in many parts of the state this year. It’s really causing a bit of chaos in various areas with the flooding, and many dams and water control structures are trying to empty at maximum, but barely keeping up (or not keeping up).

That stinks. When were you planning to launch this year? We are looking at another year where we wont drop ours in until about the second or third week of June with schedules, being away, etc…

I took this pic last week . Same ramp gate as in the pic above .20260410_121850.jpg

Andy we've lived in this area since 2004 . I drove by Crooked Lake yesterday. There is water in places I would have thought impossible. Before we moved to Indian River in 19 , we considered Black Lake . Right now it looks like they got the worst of this .
