Air Horn

Anybody have a secondary air horn? Either portable or permanent?

It was CROWDED on the lake today, and a couple times found myself head-to-head with another boat. Nothing close or dangerous, they were still several hundred yards away, but it made me think if someone wasn't paying attention, the only chance I'd have at getting their attention is the horn, and the stock model ain't all that loud...

Thinking I need something like this...

Yeah the stock horn isn't all that loud, more of a buzzer sound than a horn sound too. I also don't care for the placement, mine is mounted at the helm and pointed starboard - pefect if you want to blast at someone right next to you. :p Heck, there's been a couple times when on the hook, I hear repeated honking that sounds off in the distance, and I think to myself what idiot is playing with their horn?, only to discover it is my son playing with my horn.

Anyway, I have installed dual surface mount electric horns on my bow rider to get away from the VW Beetle 'beep' sound to more of a "Cadillac" dual tone sound, but yet to do an install of an air horn. I understand that the disadvantages of surface mount air horns are price, and need for installation of a air compressor, and size. The advantages are that they can be faced forward, are almost certainly louder (and would sound cooler), and are nice looking. You'd probably want the more compact version so you could mount to the deck somewhere on the bow. Here's one such version:

The problem with the portable canned air horns is that they are portable, so it is unlikely that one would have it in one's hand when one needs it. They also have a finite amount of compressed air, and no way to tell if someone like my son has been playing with it, so I'd be hard put to rely on it to making noise when I really needed it.

Have you looked into locomotive horns? I was at a car show a couple of years ago and a guy had mounted a locomotive horn in his car and it really got everyone's attention for blocks around when he sounded it.

I like the sound in the WAV file posted for the BadBoy, but am surprised it is *only* 118 db, the Marinco AFI 10108 12 Volt Chrome Dual Trumpet Mini Air Horn I posted a pic of is rated at 127 db. Now that's starting to get loud. My guess is the stock horns are 107 db. db levels are logarithmic, so a change of 10 db represents a change in power level by a factor of 10.

Any reason these couldn't be mounted UNDER the deck in the front? Thinking the horn opening would be flush with the front rail, or slightly back from the edge. Far as I know, I've never had any spray in that area, so they shouldn't get wet. Advantage is the point directly forwards. Our lake rarely has waves (due to the wind) any bigger than those from a typical boat going by.

From Experence, I have buried the deck of a 22' toon probably 6 times. Every time was going to stop or slow with people in the front seats. The boat slows down, drops the nose and here comes a boat wake. I would not put them under the deck.

I think you can place them under the deck. Just face them to the rear.

There's some boaters out there that I wish would point them towards the rear - or to be more specific, towards the helm!

Pretty sure mine is factory mounted to the underside if the deck right above the starboard toon nose cone. Had the boat anchored and was swimming around it yesterday. Even took a pic of it for geewest's pic forum! Now I just gotta figure out how to post it! Haha

Ok, here's how. First step upload your pics to your Gallery (I know you know how to do this). If you go to your gallery and right click on one of your pics, then select Properties - a window will pop up with information. One of the info bits is URL, and it will end in ".jpg", highlight the whole address and copy it(I use CTRL-C to copy), the make or edit your post and you want to add a "[", the word img, and a "]", paste (I use ctrl-v to paste)your link for example http://www.rustydealer.com/forum/uploads/1340670304/tn_gallery_696_139_5022167.jpg then type another "[" inside type "/img", then "]" without the quotes. So leaving out the first and last brakets so it will not be seen as code it would look like this:

img]http://www.rustydealer.com/forum/uploads/1340670304/tn_gallery_696_139_5022167.jpg[/img

If I did include the first and last brackets, the result would be this:

Type [ then everything in your 4th attempt above, then add a ]. So it's open bracket img close bracket, link, then open bracket /img close bracket.

Easy!

So close! At the end you forgot the /, should end with .

Just bought a stainless 12 v horn from Overtons. $ 50.00, thought I would give it a try. Jim is right, the factory horn is a little embarrasing. Sounds like a cross between a VW Beetle and the roadrunner. ( You know, as in the coyote) Gerry

Gerry - Let me know how it sounds, if you can describe that in words. As I think about it, it seems that would be hard to do...

"What does your horn sound like?"

Well...

Seems that would be hard to do in person let alone by typing!
