I'd hate to give a figure as someone will end up falling in based on my post and I end up getting sued! Based on my experience though one area can be solid, and two feet over it is not. Things like springs and current can weaken/prevent ice formation. Another thing to look out for on big water is industry/power plants discharging warm water. We had a guy fall in by one of our plants last year and he didn't make it.
And Jack I don't blame you!
