Really depends on your application and needs - share some more details and we'll try to help offer advice.
I have a covered vertical lift (cabled, DC motor with solar charger) and it works great for my needs - shallow-bottom lakeshore and a 25-foot tritoon. It's a bit slower than the new hydaulic lifts, but quite a bit less cash too. I think I spent $14k on my lift in 2011 and it still looks new, although I did need to replace cables on it last season. The brand I have is Pier Pleasure - your location probably has different brands. Other popular brands in MN include Floe, ShoreStation and ShoreMaster.
FWIW, I like the fabric-feel canopies vs. the vinyl. Fabric repels the water but doesn't drip condensation like the vinyl tops do (I've had both - my old ski boat had a ShoreStation with a vinyl top)
